At the very tip of New Ireland is Kavieng a fascinating tropical town that services all the islands of this area and their individual communities. With literally hundreds of islands the town can become very busy at certain times. White sand beaches and small dots of offshore islands typify this beautiful province.

A highway, the Bullominski, built when Kavieng was occupied by the Germans runs almost the full length of the main island. The gentle sandy beaches on one coast are a contrast to the steep sided bays and inlets on the other side of the main island of New Ireland.

The unique Malagan culture of this area results in the carving of highly decorated masks that have been collectors items since Kavieng first came into contact with Western cultures. Like a large number of the islands of Papua New Guinea, New Ireland was occupied by the Japanese during WWII and many obvious signs of this occupation can still be seen; large coastal guns, wrecked aircraft and bunkers can all be visited on day tours. Beneath the waters of Kavieng harbour is a submarine and a number of other ships that were sunk as a result of allied bombing attacks. For the scuba diver, schools of pelagic fish, excellent visibility and the wrecks make Kavieng a must for any diver visiting Papua New Guinea.

For the culturally inclined trips to offshore islands where there are comfortable guest houses or even cycling trips down the length of New Ireland that will put you directly in touch with the people, their day to day life and their all important cultural roots.

The accommodation in Kavieng is varied from tropical island bases like Nusa and Lissenung island to main island based facilities like the Treehouse Eco resort, Malagan Lodge or Kavieng Hotel. For the more adventuous you can escape to Mansava Island an excellent village based Resort.
